The city of Calistoga is a geothermal paradise, with a variety of hot springs to suit different tastes and budgets. It is also home to one of the world’s best-known predictable geysers: Old Faithful Geyser of California. It is often described as one of three “Old Faithful” geysers, alongside the famous geyser in Yellowstone National Park and Lady Knox Geyser in New Zealand.

These three geysers bear the designation of "Old Faithful" because of the high predictability and regularity of their eruptions (not a common occurrence among geysers).

Old Faithful Geyser in Calistoga erupts about 15 to 30 minutes, although the timing can vary with rainfall and underground water conditions.

This "faithfulness" comes from geology, a simple plumbing system, and a fairly stable climate.

Scientists from the Carnegie Institution, UC Berkeley, and the U.S. Geological Survey have studied the geyser to understand better its eruption patterns and the forces beneath Earth's surface. Researchers have also investigated possible changes in its activity before major earthquakes. However, the geyser cannot reliably predict when or where an earthquake will occur.

Old Faithful Geyser of California sits in a volcanic landscape surrounded by rocks and geothermal features. Despite its dramatic setting, it is easy to reach. There is no need to hike miles to see it. The geyser is just a short walk from the parking area.

The geyser sends hot water and steam shooting 25 to 85 feet (about 8 to 26 meters) into the air. The water temperature at the source has been reported to reach 276°F (135°C). Listen for a rumble followed by a loud hiss - signs that an eruption may be starting. On a sunny day, the sunlight may catch the mist and create a rainbow.

There is more to see than the geyser itself. Visitors can meet goats, sheep, and llamas at the animal farm, enjoy a picnic under the trees, play bocce ball with views of the geyser, or stroll through the gardens.

The nearby geology museum is also worth a visit. Although small, it features hands-on exhibits about volcanoes, earthquakes, tsunamis, and geysers, making it an interesting stop for curious visitors of all ages.
